The transmission lines will be equipped with 578 avian protection devices. The total length of the 220 kV transmission lines in this project is over 550 km. The work will be carried out on lines providing power supply to the region with the population of about 1.2 million people, the largest industrial and agricultural enterprises, including Slavneft-YANOS PJSC and Greenhouse Complex LLC. The lines pass through the habitat and migration routes of 240 bird species, 20 of which are listed in the Red Book.

About 26% of technological disturbances in the backbone power networks of Central Russia are related to bird life activities. In order to minimize the risks of outages and to protect birds from electric shock, the company equips the overhead transmission line supports with bird-off spikes. This method of protection prevents birds from landing on power lines and forces them to look for safer places to rest and nest.

For today, 317 avian protection devices are mounted on supports of four 220 kV power lines in the Yaroslavl region. By the end of September, similar work will be done on three additional overhead power lines.

Once installed, this equipment will bring 60% reduction of the risks of power line short circuits caused by bird activity and power supply interruptions for the population of Yaroslavl region and enterprises of the area, and will also protect birds from mortality, including rare, red book-listed species, such as black and white storks.

More than 1.1 thousand protective devices were installed on backbone power lines of Yaroslavl region in 2016-2019.
