The pilot project was implemented at Rosseti FGC UES's 220 kV Zhireken substation, which supplies power to the Trans-Baikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway. An experimental prototype of a modular converter device developed by the company's own R&D center (JSC R&D Center FGC UES) was implemented at the facility. The tasks of the equipment are voltage stabilization and reduction of asymmetry and higher harmonics occurring in the power network of the traction railway transit.

At present, several types of equipment are used to improve the quality of electricity in trunk grids, usually focused on solving point problems: static VAR compensator, controlled reactors, filter compensating devices, etc. The 10 Mvar converter installed at the Zhireken 220 kV substation eliminates the entire set of problems.

The development made it possible to improve the quality of electricity in 10, 110 and 220 kV networks. In the future, similar devices are planned to be used for comprehensive improvement of power supply quality in systems with non-linear and asymmetric loads in other regions, where among the consumers are traction substations of Russian Railways, mining and metallurgical enterprises with arc or electrolytic furnaces.

The Zhireken 220 kV substation with a capacity of 126 MVA supplies power to the central part of Transbaikal. The service covers an area with a population of more than 30,000 people. At the end of 2021, Rosseti FGC UES completed the reconstruction of the supply center, which included construction of a new building for the general substation control room and upgrade of the auxiliary and firefighting systems.

Russian Railways is one of the largest consumers of the power grid complex. A series of projects is being implemented in the Far East, aimed at the development of the Eastern Railway Domain. Last year, the 250-kilometer 220 kV Lesozavodsk – Spassk – Dalnevostochnaya power transit was put into operation in Primorsky Territory, which made it possible to supply the final section of the Trans-Siberian Railway with power. In the near future, the new 220 kV Nakhodka power supply center will be introduced in the region to develop rail approaches to one of the largest port areas in the Far East.
